01 / Understand the choice
What does a
fabric group mean?
It sets the upholstery price.
It doesn’t tell the whole story.
HAY places fabrics into price groups. For the same sofa and configuration, the group helps determine what you pay. A higher group is not a durability score: compare the composition, surface, care and test results too.

A closer look.
A more confident choice.
Start with the look you love. Compare up to three, then let a real sample make the final decision.
Photographs show an example colour for each fabric. Magnification varies; compare texture in person. Open “Fabric facts & colours” for HAY’s full colour charts.

Material focus / HAY Loft
Small threads.
Big character.
A distinctive weave.
Five ways to make it yours.
Loft combines 80% viscose, 11% polyester and 9% cotton in a visibly varied surface. HAY places it in group 3 and lists five colour references. See how it works on different pieces below.
Compare Loft with your favouritesHAY reports over 100,000 Martindale, lightfastness 5 and pilling 4–5. These are separate tests, not a stain or snag guarantee.

04 / Made for your everyday
Choose for the room
you actually live in.
A beautiful fabric should suit your habits as well as your home.
See it morning & evening.
Place samples beside your floor, walls and other textiles. Check daylight and artificial light. Direct sun and strong heat can change upholstery over time.
Tell us about real life.
Children, pets, favourite jeans, snacks on the sofa: all useful context. An abrasion number doesn’t tell you how a fabric handles spills or claws.
Know the routine.
Vacuum regularly with an upholstery nozzle. Gently absorb spills promptly; avoid rubbing. Follow the guidance for your exact textile before trying a cleaner.
Is group 4 better than group 1?
It costs more for the same sofa configuration, but it is not automatically more durable or more suitable. For example, HAY lists Metaphor in group 1 at 90,000 Martindale and Bolgheri in group 3 at 30,000 Martindale. Their composition and appearance are different too. Choose for the balance that matters to you.
What do Martindale, lightfastness and pilling mean?
Martindale measures resistance to abrasion under test conditions. Lightfastness describes resistance to fading from light; pilling describes the tendency for small fibre balls to form. None is a complete measure of everyday suitability. Mode uses a different abrasion test, Wyzenbeek, so its double-rub figure should not be compared directly with Martindale. Its lightfastness result is also reported differently.
Which fabric is best for children or pets?
There is no single answer from the group number. Tell us about spills, claws, colour preferences and how much maintenance you want to do. We’ll help you look at the weave, care guidance and available samples. We don’t label these fabrics stain-proof or pet-proof.
Can I wash the covers or use a stain remover?
A fabric’s composition does not mean a sofa cover is removable or machine washable. Follow the instructions for your exact sofa and upholstery. HAY’s general guidance advises against spot cleaning individual marks; ask us for the appropriate textile-specific care advice before applying cleaning products.
Can I choose a colour that is not shown here?
The fabric photographs are starting points. Open the HAY colour chart on each card for the wider palette, then send us the fabric name and colour code. We’ll confirm availability for your model and UK order before you commit.
Why does a fabric say “Ask us” for my sofa?
The live comparison uses the fabric variants currently listed for that particular sofa. A fabric may be shown in HAY’s range without a corresponding online option for your chosen model. Ask us to confirm it; don’t assume it is unavailable or order a different fabric as a substitute.
